The quick fixes they claim to offer can be attractive; however, these diets can quickly become dangerous and unhealthy. In order to keep weight off in the long run, fad diets are not a wise choice.

Fad diets are usually easy to spot because they share the same characteristics. Many promise a quick fix, promote “magic” foods, have rigid rules, make claims on a single study, and strictly exclude certain food groups.
Are Fad Diets Dangerous?
The only way to effectively lose weight and keep it off is through long-term changes to a person’s lifestyle. These changes, like exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet, are not easy or quick to change. Unfortunately, most fad diets will only lead to a decrease in water weight, which can lead to dehydration.
Many fad diets will also require a person to eat on a strict schedule, which can disrupt natural metabolism. Going against this natural pattern can negatively impact a person’s metabolism during and well beyond the diet.
Additionally, fad diets may strip a person of nutrition, since they often demand that one food group not be eaten. Carbohydrates and fat are often cut from fad diets, which leads to a significant decrease in energy and general good health. Contrary to popular belief, carbohydrates deliver energy to the body, and good fats deliver omega-3 fatty acids.
Hair and muscle loss can also occur during fad diets. Diets that exclude protein and are low in calories are generally the culprits behind this particular effect.
Healthy Weight Loss Strategies
The best diet is rather a way of life than a weight-loss solution. Eating a variety of foods, declining bad fats, eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, exercising and avoiding empty calories are all ways to lead a healthy lifestyle.
