Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has many functions in the body. It plays an important role in the formation of collagen, a stiff jelly-like substance which as a connective tissue holds together the cells of the body; it is important to development of healthy bones and teeth; it functions in the formation and maturation of red blood cells; it promotes resistance to infection; and aids the rapid healing of wounds and broken bones.

Severe deficiency results in scurvy, a disease characterized by spongy and bleeding gums, easy bruising, slow healing wounds, loss of appetite, small red spots on the skin caused by the bleeding of the small blood vessels, susceptibility to infections and extreme muscular weakness.

Pantothenic Acid is necessary for the release of energy from sugar and fat. Para-aminobenzoic acid and choline cannot be utilized without it, and it is vital to the proper functioning of the adrenal glands.

Deficiencies of this are fatigue, abdominal pains, cramps, and nausea, irritability, depression, constant colds, and paresthesia of the hands and feet. As the Pantothenic acid deficiency continued the symptoms got worse and after six weeks could result in becoming very ill. It is also associated with hypoglycemia.

Niacin (nicotinic acid) is important in tissue respiration; and is needed for proper brain functions, the nervous system, and for a healthy skin.

The early symptoms of mild and moderate deficiencies are the same as the early symptoms of pellagra: suspicion, hostility, irritability, insomnia, loss of memory, and anxiety; abdominal pain, a burning sensation in the tongue; and dry and scaly patches where the skin is exposed to sunlight. As the deficiency becomes more severe, the nervous system symptoms progress to insanity; the digestive symptoms to diarrhea; the tongue becomes red and raw-looking, and the skin patches may become cracked and fissured.

Folic Acid (Folacin) is necessary for the division of body cells and for the production of RNA and DNA, the substances which carry hereditary patterns. As a coenzyme it is required for the utilization of sugar and amino acids. Folic acid is stored primarily in the liver.

Severe folic acid deficiency results in macrocytic(large cell) anemia which is characterized by stomatitis, glossitis, diarrhea, and changes in the intestines. Less severe deficiency result in fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath and a grayish-brown skin pigmentation.
