“Even magazines whose sole purpose is to show us how to treat our bodies better, stuff their pages with diet pills and ads, giving us the option of either listening to their latest exercise regime, or finding the quick fix in a supplement pill. Everywhere I look, I keep getting the message that I’m not enough.” - Sarah
A five-year study of 2,500 female teenagers found that high school-aged females’ use of diet pills nearly doubled from 7.5 to 14.2 percent. By the ages of 19 and 20, 20 percent of females surveyed used diet pills, according to the new study.
“These numbers are startling, and they tell us we need to do a better job of helping our daughters feel better about themselves and avoid unhealthy weight control behaviors,” U of M professor and study researcher Dianne Neumark-Sztainer said.
Unfortunately diet pills are common and easily accessible to everyone, including minors. Just about every grocery store, pharmacy, convenience store and health food store carries these highly addictive substances. Ephedrine, Caffeine, and Phenylpropranolamine are just some of the dangerous and addictive substances found in diet pills.
Herbal,or “natural” diet aids can be just as dangerous as other forms of diet pills. All of these substances act as stimulants to the central nervous system and like speed, can have serious and potentially fatal side effects.
