Television star Melissa Gorga has gone undercover in New York City in order to expose the reality of living life as a 400 lb woman.

The attractive star of Real Housewives of New Jersey was transformed from 115 lbs to 400 lbs, thanks to 5 hours of special effects makeup and a “fat suit”. 7 hidden cameras follow her as she walks through New York City, enduring the challenges of life as an extremely overweight person. Her experiences are documented on an Entertainment Tonight special report, and make for an eye-opening view of what life is like for a morbidly obese person trying to cope in a society that does not easily accept large women.

Even more revealing, are the unkind looks and hurtful comments she endures from strangers.

Melissa comments on the trials of completing even the simplest task such as tying shoelaces. She is also shown struggling to make her way through subway turnstiles and awkwardly getting in and out of a cab. Melissa appears stressed from the “fat suit” which weighs 50 lbs and severely restricts her mobility, and she remarks to the audience that she does not feel like the same person anymore.

The report highlights the discrimination faced by morbidly obese people on a daily basis. There are several instances where Melissa is confronted by total strangers offering rude comments about her weight, or her presumed eating habits. She notes that people stare at her repeatedly, and whisper to each other about her appearance. Melissa reminds the audience that overweight people are often unfairly perceived to be lazy, and that the disparaging comments are extremely damaging to one’s self-esteem.

The Entertainment Tonight special report airs in 2 separate episodes on October 27th and 28th.
