First Lady Michelle Obama's campaign against childhood obesity took a personal turn when she said, “She is paying more attention to a key body fat measurement for her own daughters.” The first lady was surprised to learn that her own daughter’s BMI (Body Mass Index) was crawling upwards and she did not know what BMI was.
The first lady has targeted childhood obesity as her signature cause, at a time when one in three American children are obese or overweight due to a lack of exercise and a diet loaded with fat and sugar. She is concerned about the health consequences of childhood obesity. Overweight or obese children are believed to be more likely than their normal-weight peers to grow up to be obese adults at greater risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes (which is already at epidemic levels in the US.)
Now that the first lady is a little better versed about the BMI and how it works and what the measurements mean she is better able to continue onward with her childhood obesity campaign.
