Unregulated Appetite in Children Gains Focus in Research

Recently, scientists are pushing to find new treatment methods for hyperphagia, a condition that is often diagnosed in children with unregulated appetite. The condition is often linked to the genetic disorder Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS).

InnoCentive Inc. And the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research have joined forces to find new treatment options for those that suffer with PWS and hyperphagia. More than 6 thousand children and born with PWS each year and hyperphagia, or the feeling of constant hunger, is one of the greatest risks to their health. The result is uncontrolable weight gain, and morbid obesity. This can lead to hypertension, diabetes and lung failure.

Members of the board of Prader-Willi Research are happy to have partnered with InnoCentive to take on such a worthwhile pursuit. "We are so excited to launch this Challenge with InnoCentive. It allows us to reach so many more people, more multiple disciplines and with different perspectives, than traditional research methods. We hope this will increase the understanding of PWS and lead to treatments our loved ones with PWS so desperately need and deserve," says board member Shawn Johnson.
