To prevent dehydration:
- 8-10 glasses of fluid per day is recommended for people at rest in a normal climate. 1 cc of fluid per calorie of food intake is recommended.
- You need more if the temperature is hot and if you exercise. A general rule is an extra 2 glasses of fluid per day for every 5° over 85° if you are at rest, and more if you exercise
- The best indicator for adequate fluid intake is frequent, clear urination.
Some people with eating disorders enjoy feeling dehydrated - washed out, drained, empty; and interpret being normally hydrated with gaining weight. The danger of dehydration: You just need a quick flu, injury, or sore throat causing reduced intake to push you into severe dehydration and a trip to the hospital.
