I have been recovered for 1 year now (BMI of 20.9 for 12 months) and have many symptoms that indicate hypothyroidism. Is this a common problem among recovered anorexics and if so, what is the usual treatment plan?

Congratulations on your

Congratulations on your recovery! Hypothyroidism (low thyroid function) isn't uncommon among those who do, or who have suffered from an eating disorder. I do not know what the percentage is of this occuring in the eating disorder population, but it is a fairly easy condition to treat. You would first need to have some simple blood tests done to determine the levels of thyriod hormone that you have in your system, which will determine what dosage of medication you would need to correct the imbalance....and to make sure that your symptoms are indeed caused by hypothyroidism. The symptoms of hypothyroidism can mimic other hormonal or different health problems. Once it is determined that your thyriod function is low or unbalanced, your doctor will determine the medication you need to manage the problem. Hypothyroidism isn't a condition that you can change, but you can only take the necessary doage of synthetic thyriod hormone to maintain a normal balance in your body. Left untreated, a low functioning thyoid can cause some very uncomfortable and severe problems throughout your body, and even severe thyroid damage over time. It's important that you have this checked out right away by your family doctor or an endocrinologist. Take care, and continued good health in your recovery!
