I lost my period at 16 in November of 2006. A couple weeks ago it finally returned! :) Will the bone density I lost return too, or am I going to get/have osteopenia/ osteoperosis?

Hi: I'm glad to hear that

Hi:

I'm glad to hear that your body is healing and that you are beginning to experience a return of normal body functions.

Eating disorders take an enormous emotional and physical toll on a person. As you have noted, it can take a long time for your body to physically recover, and heal from the effects of anorexia and/or bulimia.

A loss of bone mineral density (osteopenia) is a serious consequence of having an eating disorder which may affect up to 90 percent of individuals suffering from anorexia. Osteopenia is caused by a number of factors including poor nutrition, although it is also associated with a loss of estrogen which can cause an absence of regular menstrual periods.

Bone density loss places a person at greater risk of developing osteoporosis.

Your question about bone density and osteopenia/osteoporosis is best answered by a medical doctor. He/she will be able to give you information on whether or not you are at risk, and how best to address your nutritional/exercise needs.

Wishing you well.
