Ok, so I am recovering from bulimia and I have gained 15 lbs! I'm working out almost every day and i have like 1200 calories a day. i haven't thrown up in 6 weeks. Is this normal? When will my body function right again??

Hi: I'm happy to hear that

Hi:

I'm happy to hear that you have decided to look after yourself, and work on your bulimia. Recovery takes time, and progress is not always smooth and even. You may find that it takes some time for your body to regain its natural rhythm. As each one of us is different, it's hard to say exactly how long that will be. In the meantime, there are several things you can do to set yourself up for success, and ensure that you give yourself the proper care you deserve!

Stopping the binge/purge cycle is important, but so is working on some of the reasons behind your eating disorder. Set backs are a normal part of recovery, and it is easy to become discouraged if you are unprepared. Talking with a counselor or joining a support group can proviide help and encouragement during stressful times.

I'm a little concerned that you are getting the right sort of nourishment now that you are in recovery. Everyone burns calories differently, according to a number of factors such as metabolism and lifestyle. 1200 calories per day seems quite low, and it is important to eat enough of the right sort of food. A healthy, balanced diet combined with regular exercise is the best way to take care of yourself - remembering that it is the long-term goal of healthy eating patterns that you need. It may help to consult with a health care professional such as a dietician or a physician if you are concerned about your current diet and weight gain.

Through all of this I would encourage you to be kind to yourself! Your decision to take care of your eating disorder is an excellent start - take things one step at a time, surround yourself with caring and supportive individuals, and allow yourself the time to heal. Take care.
