I am a licensed psychotherapist working in the field of eating disorders for over 20 years. I believe eating disorders come about for reasons and typically begin as an unconscious attempt to solve a problem for which the eating disordered symptoms represent solutions. These problems, while generally unrelated to food or body image at origin, find solace in the focal point of the obsession, as does the individual find a voice to communicate through the metaphors expressed in the symptoms. Discovering the underlying needs and unveiling a truer experience of Self, along with developing the capacity to embrace and express the authentic Self, is ultimately the purpose of treatment and represents the attainment of recovery.
