The challenge of treating eating disorders is made more difficult by the metabolic changes associated with them. Just to maintain a stable weight, individuals with anorexia may actually have to consume more calories than someone of similar weight and age without an eating disorder. Consuming calories is exactly what the person with anorexia wishes to avoid, yet must do to regain the weight necessary for recovery. Some people that are at a normal weight, yet have bulimia may gain excess weight if they consume the number of calories required to maintain normal weight in others of similar size and age.
You will usually have an individual consultation, one-on-one meetings, and some will offer group meetings. Topics often include:
- Meal planning inside and outside the home
- Dining out strategies
- Application of intuitive eating principles
- Honoring hunger, fullness and cravings
- Introduction and challenge of new foods
- Supermarket shopping
Nutritionists will often help clients create a food plan and may encourage clients to create a food diary. Their focus is on individual behavior modification, and a client’s individual needs are always considered when developing a personalized plan. A dedicated registered dietitian, nutrition therapist, and member of your health care team, their goal is to provide patients with the necessary knowledge, support and motivation to achieve and maintain their goals.
