How To Recognize The Signs of An Eating Disorder In Boys

Eating disorders tend to be associated with women and girls but the reality is that it is quite prevalent in men and boys as well. Disordered eating is actually growing faster in males than in females. Approximately one-third of those struggling with an eating disorder are male. As well, the signs and symptoms of an eating disorder are different in males than females; therefore, it is not as easy to detect and diagnose.

According to a study, boys tend to develop an eating disorder at a younger age than girls. Boys start to show symptoms at the age of 13, whereas girls start at the age of 14. And for girls, an eating disorder may be associated with a mood disorder and that's not the case for boys.

Signs and Symptoms of Eating Disorders In Boys

There are certain behaviors that can help parents and medical professionals diagnose a boy with an eating disorder. If he has formed any of the following habits, then it is important to talk to a medical professional to further examine the issue:

Over-exercising: spending far too much time and energy on exercise.

Avoiding social eating: when he makes excuses not to eat socially and avoids such occasions more often than not.

Obsessing over nutritional facts: reading food labels and nutritional content.

Going to the bathroom: if he is frequently going to the bathroom mid-meal or directly after a meal.

Consumed by physical appearance: spending far too much time on appearance and looking in the mirror.

Weight loss: when weight loss is sudden or dramatic.

Eating disorder sufferers try to hide their symptoms; therefore, it is important for parents to pay attention to any of these red flags. This way a medical professional can properly diagnose and treat the eating disorder.
